SDCC Day 4: “Under The Dome”

CBS’ UNDER THE DOME has been the big hit of the summer, with Brian K. Vaughan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s bestseller proving to be an enticing drama. Now, it’s time for the panel, my last “live” blog of the day (internet is awful here, and the time stamp function is defective) and the of the Con. I hope you’ve enjoyed my incessant updates, unbridled enthusiasm/sarcasm, and will join us again next year, or better yet, come to San Diego and show me how to do this better.

Dean Norris, Mike Vogel, Rachelle Lefevre, Neal Baer and Brian K. Vaughan will be in the panel.

Apparently we get to see Episode 5 24 hours before anyone else, followed by a Q&A. I haven’t been able to see Ep 4 yet due to the Con, so that’s ironic.

The episode was pretty good. It had some melodrama and cheesiness, but BIG stuff happens at the end.

Brian K. Vaughan was name-dropped in the original book.

On the subject of a Barbia/Julia hook up: there’s a journey to be had (yes).

Vogel on Barbie: Likes the mystery, will have to reconcile past and good that he has done inside the dome.

Dean Norris on father/son relationship: “Learn a lot about Junior. His deceased mother plays in there. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” That’s what he would have said if he got the phrase correctly.

Vaughan on changing King’s novel: “Terrifying.”

Originally, King wanted to tell the story under the dome for YEARS, but when he was writing he was at page 1,000 after only a few days for the characters, so he knew he had to wrap it up. He told Vaughan to take advantage of the ongoing television series format, which clearly hints that this isn’t simply a miniseries.

Lefevre: “Important to have female characters that don’t act on the whims of her feelings…or in reaction to men.”

All secrets will be revealed this season…or at least the propane stuff and Coggins/Big Jim’s relationship. That’s not the most reassuring. There’s a ton more coming into play.

“Mysterious women…trapped under the dome as well…some people you haven’t met yet…that will be crucial to unfurling this story.”

Originally pitched to Showtime, but most content didn’t change aside from “fewer naughty words.”

Norris: “A lot easier to play a bad guy.”

Someone asked about plans after season 1 and all the secrets being revealed…and the answer was an advertisement for November 5th: full series coming to DVD/Blu-Ray.

A fan asked about Jeff Fahey and whether or not he could return in flashback form. Left open, but was done for the old adage “no one is safe.”

Stephen King encouraged Vaughan to make changes. “Even if you’ve read the entire novel, and you think you know the dome and where it comes from…you don’t.”
